The city itself
One city, a dozen different lock problems
What we get called to depends entirely on which part of San Diego you are standing in.
Downtown (the Gaslamp Quarter, East Village, Little Italy, the Marina, Columbia, Cortez Hill and Core) is a high-rise city. That means access control rather than a front door: a lobby, a garage roller with a fob, an elevator that wants a credential for your floor, and a unit door behind all of it. Half the work of a downtown callout is getting to the door in the first place, which is why we ask on the phone whether you can meet us in the lobby or at the garage entrance, and whether the building has an on-site manager at that hour.
Push a few miles north or east and the housing changes completely. North Park still has streets of 1920s and 1930s Craftsman bungalows. The Dryden Historic District, along 28th and Pershing between Landis and Upas, is 136 houses of it. Original doors, original strikes, and cylinders that have been rekeyed by five owners. Those need patience rather than force, and often a repair rather than a replacement.
West of the 5 the picture changes again: Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach run on short-term rentals and shared entries, where the lock most likely to fail is the one that has been handled by a different set of guests every weekend. Point Loma, Clairemont and Mira Mesa are mostly single-family with attached garages, which is the classic “door to the garage pulled shut behind me” call. San Ysidro and Otay Mesa sit on the border and run on a different clock entirely.
We reach all of it on the 5, the 805, the 15, the 8, the 163 and the 94, and we plan the route round the hour, because the 5 through downtown at 5pm is not the 5 at 3am. Everything a locksmith does turns up somewhere in this city in any given week: cylinders rekeyed, tired deadbolts swapped out, high security fitted on a street door, master keys built for a building, transponder keys and fobs programmed at the kerb, an office relocked after somebody leaves, and the small-hours lockout.

I live in a downtown high-rise. Can you even get to my door?
We can work on your unit door, but we cannot let ourselves through the lobby, the garage roller or a floor-restricted lift: that is the building's access control, not your lock.
So tell us on the phone how we get in. Meeting us in the lobby, at the garage entrance or having the on-site manager buzz us through is normally all it takes. If the building has no night staff, say so and we will plan around it.
Which parts of San Diego do you actually cover?

My house is from the 1920s and the key barely turns. Do I need new locks?
Usually not. On the older bungalow stock in North Park, Golden Hill and Hillcrest the common faults are a worn cylinder, a dropped door that no longer meets its strike, and a key that has been copied from a copy from a copy.
That is lock repair and a fresh key, and it keeps the original hardware on the door. We will tell you plainly if a lock is genuinely past saving.
I am locked out of a car in a beach or ballpark parking structure.
That is a normal call. Give us the structure, the level and the bay number, and stay with the car if you safely can. Most structures look identical from the inside and the bay number saves everyone ten minutes.
We open it with automotive tools at the vehicle. If the key is gone rather than shut inside, we can cut and program a replacement there too.
Do you charge more to come to the far side of the city?
We quote the whole job on the phone before we set off, and distance is part of that number along with the hour and the work itself. What we will not do is give you a low number and then discover a travel charge when we arrive.
Ask for the figure when you call. If it does not suit you, no one has driven anywhere.
Can you rekey several doors and give me one key?
Yes, where the locks are compatible. Front, back, side gate and garage on one key is one of the most common jobs we do in the older single-family neighbourhoods.
In a condo or an apartment the unit door is yours to rekey; anything shared (the lobby, the mail room, the garage) needs the HOA or the management company to authorise it.
