Getting on and off the island
Two ways in, and one of them backs up
The San Diego-Coronado Bridge is 2.1 miles of SR-75 with five lanes and a movable barrier that reverses the centre lane for peak traffic.
Its eastern end lands on a T interchange with the 5 just southeast of downtown San Diego. The tolls came off in 2002 and traffic rose about 20% afterwards, which is a polite way of saying the approach can queue. The alternative is the Silver Strand (SR-75 the long way round through Imperial Beach), which is further but is sometimes the faster road, and we make that call ourselves when you ring.
What we will not do is pretend the bridge is never busy. If we tell you a time, it already accounts for which road we are taking and what hour it is.
The other access question is the Navy. Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Amphibious Base Coronado together make up Naval Base Coronado, and their gates are controlled by the installation: contractor access runs through the base's own visitor control process. If your car or your quarters are inside the fence, that has to be arranged through your command before a locksmith is any use to you. Everything on the civilian side (the Village, the Shores, the Cays, Glorietta, the Country Club end and the Strand) is an ordinary callout. Island work covers the whole range: corroded cylinders serviced, locks rekeyed and replaced, high security on exposed doors, spare and master keys for a household, fobs and vehicle keys programmed at the car, business locks along Orange Avenue, and openings when a key has gone.
Four Coronados
Cottages, towers, waterfront and quarters
The lock on a 1900s Village cottage has nothing in common with a tower unit at the Shores.
The Village, along and around Orange Avenue, is the old town: period houses and cottages, many of them small-lot and much-altered, with doors and hardware that have been through a century of coastal air. Salt corrodes; a cylinder half a block from the water ages differently from one in El Cajon. Lubricated and rekeyed, most of them keep going.
The Coronado Shores is ten towers of roughly 1,500 units built through the 1970s, with a 24-hour doorperson and patrol officers on the grounds. That is access control rather than a lock: we can work on your unit door and your storage, but the lobby and the lifts belong to the association, so tell us which tower and arrange for us to be let through.
The Coronado Cays, at the south end, is waterfront housing arranged in villages with their own homeowners' association: docks, gates, boat lockers and outbuildings as well as front doors.
Glorietta and the Country Club end are more conventional single-family streets, and the Hotel del Coronado (a National Historic Landmark, built in 1888) anchors the beach side of all of it.
One practical note that applies to the entire island: parking. In summer, around the beach and along Orange Avenue, it is the slowest part of any callout. If you can tell us where a van will physically fit, you have saved us both time.

Coronado questions
Does the bridge traffic mean a longer wait?
Sometimes, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. The bridge is the direct route and it queues at peak; the Silver Strand is longer in miles and occasionally quicker in minutes.
We decide the route when you call, and the time we give you already accounts for it. If something changes on the road, we ring you rather than letting you wonder.
Can you come onto the naval base?
Not on our own authority. Naval Base Coronado controls its own gates and contractor access runs through the base's visitor control process. That is arranged by your command or sponsor, not by a locksmith turning up at the gate.
If the vehicle or the quarters are inside the fence, sort access first and then call us. Everything on the civilian side of Coronado is a normal job.
I live in one of the Shores towers. How does that work?
We work on your unit door, your storage and your mailbox. The lobby, the lifts and the garage are the association's access control, and each tower has its own board and its own 24-hour desk.
Tell us the tower number and arrange for the desk to let us up; with that in place it is a straightforward job.
The lock on my Village cottage grinds and the key sticks. Is it worn out?
Often it is salt and grit rather than wear. Coronado is a coastal environment and cylinders half a block from the water pick up corrosion that a lock ten miles inland never sees.
The right treatment is servicing with a proper lock lubricant (not oil, which collects grit and makes it worse), plus a rekey and fresh keys. If the cylinder is genuinely finished we will tell you, and on a period door we will look at keeping the visible hardware.
Do you cover the Coronado Cays?
Yes: house doors, gates, outbuildings, dock boxes and boat lockers. It is a homeowners' association area, so shared gates and common facilities go through the association rather than through an individual resident.
Tell us which village you are in and where a van can park; the Cays layout is not obvious from outside it.
My key fob went in the sea. Is it recoverable?
Sometimes, and it is worth trying: get the battery out immediately, do not press anything, and let it dry properly. Salt water is much less forgiving than fresh.
If it does not come back, we supply and program replacement fobs at the vehicle. Have the registration and photo ID with you. We confirm the car is yours before programming anything to it.
