West of the 805
The old grid, and what it does to locks
Chula Vista is the second-largest city in San Diego County. Its original core sits west of Hilltop Drive and north of L Street, with the Montgomery area (annexed in 1986) below it.
This is the older half of Chula Vista: numbered and lettered streets, single-storey houses, duplexes, small apartment courts and a lot of doors that have been rehung more than once. The faults are mechanical and unglamorous: a deadbolt that no longer lines up with its strike, a knob lock worn smooth, a key that turns three-quarters of the way and stops. Most of it is a repair and a rekey rather than a new lock.
It is also the half where rental turnover is highest, and a rekey between tenants is the single most useful thing a landlord here can do. We can put front, back and the side gate on one key while we are there.
Access is off the 5 on the west edge or the 805 through the middle, with the 54 across the top toward National City and Bonita. Both halves of the city get the same full service. Pins changed on a turnover, worn hardware replaced, gate and community keys copied, fobs and vehicle keys programmed on the driveway, shop and unit locks kept working, and, when it goes wrong, somebody let back in.

East of the 805
Master-planned, gated, and full of things that need a code
Building east of the 805 started in the late 1980s and has not really stopped.
EastLake began in 1986, Rancho del Rey in 1989, Otay Ranch in 1999 across 23,000 acres, and Millenia after that. The result is an east side of HOAs, community gates, keypad garages and front doors that are often the least-used entrance in the house: most people come in through the garage, so the front cylinder sits untouched for years and then seizes on the one day you need it.
Practical consequences for a callout: we need the gate code or a resident to let us through, the house numbers are often not visible from the road, and on a smart or keypad-equipped door there is a real question of whether you need a locksmith or a dead battery replaced. We will ask that on the phone rather than driving out to change a battery for you.
The east side is reached on the 805, on Telegraph Canyon and Olympic Parkway, or on the South Bay Expressway, the toll extension of the 125 that opened in November 2007.

Do you come out to EastLake, Otay Ranch and Millenia?
Yes: the whole east side, including EastLake, Rancho del Rey, Otay Ranch, Millenia, Sunbow and Terra Nova.
Tell us on the phone if there is a community gate. A code, a call-box entry or a neighbour meeting us at the gate all work; what does not work is a van sitting outside a closed gate while you are locked out on the other side of it.
My front door has a keypad and it has stopped responding. Is that a locksmith job?
Sometimes, and often not. On a keypad or smart deadbolt the first suspect is the battery, and the second is the alignment of the bolt. A lock that is fighting a misaligned strike will drain a battery in weeks.
Say what brand it is and what it is doing when you call. If it is a battery we will tell you that on the phone rather than charging you to fit one. Every smart lock we know of also has a mechanical key override, and we can rekey that.
I am a landlord on the west side. Can you rekey between tenants?
Yes, and it is the right call: a rekey means every key handed out before today stops working, without replacing the hardware.
We can also put the front door, the back door and the side gate on one key, and set up a simple master system if you own several units in the same block.
Which side of the 805 are you based on?
Neither. We are a mobile locksmith with no shop. The vans carry the pins, cylinders, blanks, key machines and programming kit, and they work the whole city.
That is also why there is no address anywhere on this site. There is nothing to walk into.
Can you make a car key in a driveway out in Otay Ranch?
Yes. Car keys, transponder keys and fobs are cut and programmed at the vehicle, so the car does not have to move and you do not need a tow.
Have the VIN, your photo ID and the registration ready. We confirm the car is yours before we make a key for it, every time, no exceptions.
Is the toll road faster for getting to me?
Sometimes, and we make that call ourselves. The South Bay Expressway is the toll section of the 125; the 805 with Telegraph Canyon or Olympic Parkway is often just as quick off-peak.
Either way it is our routing problem, not yours, and it does not change the price you were quoted on the phone.
