The Box
Old locks, in a hot valley, at high density
El Cajon sits in a valley about 17 miles east of downtown San Diego, the box-like shape the city is named for.
The numbers matter here because they describe the work. In the city's own housing analysis, roughly 67% of El Cajon's homes were built before 1970 and about 84% before 1980; around 41% of units are at least fifty years old. Single-family detached houses are about 41% of the stock, multifamily about 49%, and mobile homes a little over 5%.
Translated into lock work: a lot of cylinders that have been in the door for half a century and have been rekeyed more times than anyone remembers, a lot of apartment and condo doors turning over between tenants, and a real population of mobile homes whose locks are a different animal from a residential deadbolt: lighter doors, narrower stiles, and hardware you cannot simply swap for something off a shelf.
Then the heat. El Cajon's record high is 114°F, set in September 2020, and an inland valley summer does something specific to old doors: they expand, the bolt stops meeting the strike squarely, and the key that worked in March needs a shoulder behind it in August. That is an alignment repair. Forcing it is how the key ends up in two pieces.

Do not force the key
A stiff fifty-year-old cylinder plus a hot swollen door is the exact recipe for a snapped key. Stop, and call before it breaks rather than after.

Check whether the bolt or the key is the problem
If the key turns freely with the door open, the lock is fine and the strike is not. That is a ten-minute adjustment rather than new hardware.

The key worked all winter and now I have to fight it. What changed?
The door, almost certainly. El Cajon summers are hot (the city's record is 114°F, in September 2020) and an old timber door swells enough that the bolt stops meeting the strike plate cleanly.
Open the door and try the key with the door swung open. If it turns easily, the lock is fine and the alignment is not, and that is a repair rather than a new lock.
My home is a mobile home. Do you work on those locks?
Yes. Mobile-home doors have narrower stiles and different latch geometry from a house door, so the hardware is not interchangeable with what a hardware shop sells for a front door.
Tell us it is a mobile home when you call and roughly how old the unit is, so we bring something that will actually fit.
I manage an apartment building here. Can you rekey a unit the same day?
Rekeying is the standard turnover job and it is quick: we change the pins in the existing cylinder, so every key issued before that day stops working.
For a building we can also set up a master system, so one management key opens every unit while each tenant's key opens only theirs. Shared doors need the owner's authorisation, not a resident's.
Is my old lock worth repairing or should I just replace it?
It depends on what is worn. A cylinder with tired pins and a sticky mechanism is usually worth servicing and rekeying. A lock with a cracked case, a bent bolt or a worn cam is not.
