Getting to you
Three highways and a lot of miles
Interstate 5 runs the length of Oceanside, and State Route 76 and State Route 78 both begin inside the city limits.
That gives us three ways in and it matters more here than almost anywhere else we work. The 5 is the coastal spine and it carries the whole of North County plus everything heading for Orange County. The 78 comes across from Vista, San Marcos and Escondido. The 76 runs inland along the river past the mission. Which one we use depends entirely on where in Oceanside you actually are, because a job on Seacoast and a job off College Boulevard are not the same trip.
Here is the honest part. Oceanside sits at the far northern edge of San Diego County. We are not going to quote you a number of minutes on a web page — nobody who has driven the 5 through Carlsbad at five in the afternoon would believe it anyway. Call, tell us the cross street, and we will tell you what the drive genuinely looks like from where the van is at that moment. If it is longer than you want to wait, you deserve to hear that before you commit rather than after.
The Oceanside Transit Center is worth naming separately, because it is one of the busiest interchanges in the county — Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner, Metrolink up to Los Angeles, the Coaster down to San Diego and the Sprinter east to Escondido all meet there. Keys get lost on trains. If yours went with one, we can cut and program a replacement at the car rather than have it towed.
The other Oceanside
Beach cottages, ranch tracts and base housing
The strip along the sand and the neighbourhoods up on the mesa are two different jobs.
South Oceanside — South O to everyone who lives there — sits down by Highway 101 and the beach, and it is older, smaller-lot housing where a lot of the original hardware is still on the door. Loma Alta and Fire Mountain are up above it; Fire Mountain is a mostly 1970s and 1980s custom-built pocket on larger, semi-rural lots. San Luis Rey sits inland around the 1861 mission. Ivey Ranch and Rancho Del Oro are newer tract housing over toward the 78. Ocean Hills is a senior community. St Malo is a small gated enclave of a couple of dozen houses on the sand.
Then there is the part that shapes this city more than any of it: Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton begins at the northern boundary. Oceanside is where a very large number of Marine families live, and families on orders move — a lot. A change of tenancy is the single most common reason anyone here calls a locksmith. You do not know who held a key to that house before you did. A rekey takes the existing locks and re-pins them to a brand new key, so the old ones stop working, and it is usually the cheapest sensible thing you can do on a move-in day.
Salt is the other constant. Anywhere in the first few blocks off the water — the pier, the harbour, the Strand end of South O — cylinders, hinges and strike plates corrode in a way they simply do not two miles inland. A key that has started to need a wiggle is telling you something.

Oceanside questions
Can you come onto Camp Pendleton?
No, and no locksmith can promise you otherwise. Camp Pendleton controls its own gates. Visitors have to be sponsored by an authorised ID cardholder and screened through the Visitor Control Center by the Main Gate, and contractors need a sponsor to submit a roster to the base security section several business days in advance.
That is not something we can arrange from the road. If the vehicle or the quarters are inside the fence, work the access through your command first. Everything on the civilian side of Oceanside is an ordinary callout.
How long will it take you to get here?
We will tell you on the phone, and we will tell you the truth. Oceanside is at the far north end of San Diego County and the honest answer changes with the hour and with where the van already is.
What we will not do is print a number of minutes on a website to win the click and then keep you waiting. Ring us, and if the drive is longer than suits you, say so — we would rather you knew.
We just got orders and moved into a rental. Should we rekey?
We would, yes. Between the previous tenants, whoever they lent a key to, and however many copies were cut over the years, the number of keys that open that door is genuinely unknown.
Rekeying keeps the locks you have and re-pins them to a new key, so every older key stops working. It is quick, and it is done at the door.
The lock on my South O place has gone stiff. Is it worn out?
Down near the water it is usually corrosion and grit rather than wear. Sea air gets into the cylinder and the springs, and the first sign is a key that needs jiggling or lifting.
The fix is proper servicing with a lock lubricant — not household oil, which holds grit and accelerates the problem — and often a rekey while we are in there. If the cylinder is genuinely finished we will say so instead of charging you to service a dead one.
Do you cover the harbour and the pier area?
Yes — houses, apartments, boat lockers, storage and vehicles. Parking is the constraint rather than the lock: in summer the blocks around the pier and the harbour fill up completely.
If you can tell us where a van will physically fit, or meet us at a spot where it can, that is genuinely the difference between a quick job and a slow one.
I live in Ocean Hills and the community has rules about the front door. Does that matter?
It can. Communities with architectural rules often specify the finish and sometimes the style of visible exterior hardware, and the association is entitled to ask you to put it back.
