Heat is a lock problem
What a hundred-degree afternoon does to a door
Escondido has a hot-summer inland climate. The county record of 115°F was set here in September 2020.
People think of locks as failing from wear, and they do, but inland the more common story is movement. Timber doors and frames take on moisture in winter and give it back through a dry, baking summer. Metal expands. What that produces is a latch or a deadbolt that no longer lines up with its strike plate, so the bolt drags, the key needs forcing, and eventually something gives — usually the key.
The tell is simple: if you have to lift, push or pull the door to turn the key, it is the door and the frame, not the lock. Adjusting or repositioning the strike fixes that properly. Replacing the lock does not, and plenty of people find that out the expensive way.
Exterior padlocks, gate hardware and anything unpainted takes a beating up here too. Full sun on a west-facing gate in August is a harsher environment for a cheap padlock than most people credit.

Escondido has a genuine historic core, a large rental population, and outer neighbourhoods that look nothing like either.
The Old Escondido Historic District is Victorian and Craftsman housing from the late 1800s and early 1900s — mortise locks, original escutcheons, doors that have been rehung more than once. Replacing lovely old door furniture with a modern handle set is a last resort, not a first move.
Downtown runs along Grand Avenue, with the Ritz Theater, the California Center for the Arts, and the Cruisin' Grand car nights that fill the street on Friday evenings from spring to autumn. It is a genuinely busy small-city high street, which means shopfronts, back doors, stockrooms and staff turnover — the ordinary commercial rekey and master-key work.
Beyond that the city spreads out: Felicita, East Valley and Kit Carson on the edges, with Kit Carson Park and its Queen Califia sculpture garden, Daley Ranch's three thousand acres to the north, and Dixon Lake above the city. Escondido questions
My door only sticks in summer. Is the lock failing?
Almost certainly not. A door that works in February and fights you in August is a door and frame that have moved with heat and humidity, not a lock that has broken.
The proper fix is realigning or repositioning the strike plate so the bolt has a clean path again. Changing the lock leaves you with a new lock and the same problem.
I have original locks on an Old Escondido house. Can they be saved?
Often, yes, and we would rather save them. Period mortise work can usually be cleaned, serviced and rekeyed while keeping the visible hardware exactly as it is.
If a component is genuinely beyond repair we will show you which one and explain the options before anything is removed.
It is 104 degrees and I have locked my keys in the car.
If a child or a pet is shut in that car, call 911 first and then call us. That is not a locksmith decision, it is a time decision.
If it is just the keys, ring us and wait somewhere shaded. We open the car where it stands and can cut and program a replacement key there if the original is gone.

Then you rekey. It is the only way to make an unknown number of old keys stop working without replacing the hardware.
