The valley
Horse country with an unincorporated address
Bonita is unincorporated San Diego County: about 13,000 people between Chula Vista, National City and San Diego, bounded by the 54 to the north and the 805 to the west, and described by the county as a rural and equestrian enclave in the middle of suburbia.
The valley keeps its horse trails, and Sweetwater Regional Park, Rohr Park and the Sweetwater Reservoir shape where the roads go. Sweetwater Dam, finished in 1888, borders Bonita on one side and La Presa on the other, which is why the two places are close as the crow flies and not close at all by road.
The housing largely dates from the 1960s through the 1980s: Bonita Verde Estates, Bonita Highlands, Emerald Ranch and the custom properties along the valley. Forty to sixty years on, that means original hardware on a lot of front doors, and it means big lots: long driveways, detached garages, gates at the road, and outbuildings a long way from the house.
That is the real difference between a Bonita callout and a Chula Vista one. Here the job is often not the front door at all. It is a gate padlock at the end of a drive, a tack room, a barn door, a feed store, a well house, a workshop, or a run of outbuildings where every lock takes a different key and nobody can find half of them. Bringing that under one keyed system is one of the more satisfying jobs we do.
Access is off the 54, or Bonita Road across the valley, or Willow Road; the 125 South Bay Expressway runs east of it. On a property with a gate at the road, tell us the gate code or come down and let us in. That is the single most common delay out here. On a Bonita property the work spreads out well past the front door: gate and padlock keys, barn and tack room locks, a house rekeyed after a purchase, master keys so one key covers the lot, high security where it faces the road, vehicle keys on the drive, and an opening when something shuts behind you.

Bonita questions
Do you do barns, tack rooms and gate padlocks, or only houses?
All of it. On a Bonita property the outbuildings usually outnumber the house doors, and tack rooms, feed stores, workshops, well houses and gates are ordinary work for us.
If you want them all on one key rather than a ring of twelve, say so. We can design a small keyed system around who needs to reach what.
There is a gate at the end of my driveway. How does that work?
Give us the code when you call, or arrange for someone to come down and open it. That is genuinely the main thing that slows a Bonita callout down.
If the gate lock itself is the problem (a keypad that has died, a padlock seized in the weather), tell us that on the phone so we bring the right hardware for it.
My post says Chula Vista but I live in Bonita. Does that matter?
Not to us. Bonita is unincorporated San Diego County wedged between Chula Vista, National City and San Diego, and the mailing addresses do not follow the boundary.

The house was built in the seventies and still has its original locks.
Very common here: most of Bonita's housing went up between the 1960s and the 1980s. Cylinders of that age can usually be serviced and rekeyed rather than replaced, and on a custom door that is often the better answer anyway.
Where a lock is genuinely worn out we will say so and show you why, rather than replacing hardware that still has years in it.
Somebody has a key to the property and I want that to stop.
Rekey. We change the pins in the locks you already have so every existing key stops working that day, and you control how many new keys exist.
On a property with a house, a garage, a barn and a gate, we would usually rekey it as a small system in one visit rather than door by door.
Can you cut a car key at a property out in the valley?
Yes. Car keys, transponder keys and fobs are cut and programmed at the vehicle wherever it is parked, so nothing has to be towed off the property.
