Where you actually are
Named after a dam, addressed as somewhere else
La Presa was part of the Spring Valley census area from 1970 until 1990, and the postal address never caught up.
The name comes from the Sweetwater Dam (la presa, the dam), completed in 1888 and still run by the Sweetwater Authority. The reservoir it holds back borders La Presa on one side and Bonita on the other, which is why the two feel connected even though the drive round is longer than the distance across the water.
Practically, that means three things when you ring a locksmith. Your address says Spring Valley. Your community is unincorporated county, so there is no city hall and no city police. And the streets around the reservoir do not run in a grid: Jamacha Boulevard, Jamacha Road, Sweetwater Road and Sweetwater Springs Boulevard bend around the water and the hills, and a house number without a cross street is a genuinely slow way to be found.
This is also a dense, settled place: about 10,700 homes in six square miles, with a 97.7% occupancy rate at the last census and roughly 64% of occupied homes owner-occupied. Very little sits empty. What that produces is not turnover work but long-tenure work: locks that have been on the same door for twenty years, keys worn thin from daily use, spare keys for grown children and carers, and the lockout that happens when the one remaining spare is inside the house. What twenty years on the same door does to a lock
In a community where almost nothing is vacant, the locks are old in use rather than old in years.
A key that has opened the same door twice a day for two decades wears down, and so do the pins it lifts. The symptom is always the same: it works if you jiggle it, then one morning it does not work at all, usually with your hand still on it and the car running.
The fix is normally a rekey and a fresh set of keys cut from code rather than copied from the worn one. Copying a worn key just makes a worn key. We cut them in the van while we are with you.

My address says Spring Valley. Am I on the right page?
If you are near Sweetwater Reservoir, on or off Jamacha Boulevard, Sweetwater Road or Sweetwater Springs Boulevard, then yes: that is La Presa, even though the mail says Spring Valley. The community was part of the Spring Valley census area until 1990 and the postal address never changed.
It makes no difference to the service. Tell us the cross street and we come.
Why does my key work some days and not others?
Because it is worn. A key used twice a day for years loses the precise depths that lift the pins, so it starts needing a wiggle and eventually stops working altogether.
Cutting another copy from the worn key just gives you a second worn key. We rekey the cylinder and cut fresh keys to the new code, which fixes it properly.
Too many people have keys to my house. What do I do?
Rekey. We change the pins inside the locks you already have, so every key in circulation stops working that day, and you decide how many new ones exist and who gets them.
It is cheaper than replacing hardware and it takes one visit. If you want the house, the garage and the gate on a single key, we can usually do that at the same time.
Is there a police department here if I have been broken into?
No. La Presa is unincorporated San Diego County, so it is the Sheriff, not a city police force. Call 911 first if a door has been forced or you think someone is inside.
We will come and secure or replace the door hardware afterwards, once you are safe and a report is under way.
Can you cut spare keys at the house rather than me driving somewhere?
Yes. The key machine is in the van, so house keys and most car keys are cut where you are standing while we are with you.
High security keys are the exception: those blanks are controlled, and we confirm you are entitled to a copy before cutting one. That restriction is the point of them.
