Why the calendar matters
Turnover is the local lock problem
California State University San Marcos and Palomar College sit within a few miles of each other, and both bring a large rental population that moves on a schedule.
CSUSM occupies a 304-acre hillside campus with something like fourteen thousand students; Palomar College's main campus is around two hundred acres with a far larger headcount again across its programmes. Around them sits the University District and North City, plus a wide belt of houses, apartments and rooms let to students and staff.
Rental turnover is where locksmiths earn their keep. Every handover is a moment where nobody can say how many working keys exist — the previous tenants, their friends, the housemate who moved out in March, a letting agent, whoever was cutting spares at a hardware counter. Rekeying keeps the locks that are already on the door and re-pins them to a fresh key, and every older copy stops working the moment we finish. It is quick, it is done at the door, and for a landlord with several units it is worth setting up so one key covers the ones you need and no key covers all of them by accident.

Off campus
Hillside tracts, older lake housing and the 78
San Marcos is far more than its two campuses, and the rest of it looks nothing like them.
State Route 78 runs across the city with six interchanges, and the county routes fill in the rest — Rancho Santa Fe Road, San Marcos Boulevard, Twin Oaks Valley Road and Mission Road. Off those sit a long list of named neighbourhoods: San Elijo Hills up on the ridge, Discovery Hills, Coronado Hills, Santa Fe Hills, Twin Oaks Valley, Richmar, Old Creek Ranch and Rancho Tesoro.
San Elijo Hills and the newer hillside tracts are association-governed, which usually means rules about the finish and style of anything visible from the street. That is easy to work with as long as we know before we start — most of what we do is inside the lock anyway.
Lake San Marcos at the western end is older and quieter, with a lit cross on the hill above it that you can see at night from a long way off. Older housing means older hardware, and older hardware means the fix is often a service and a rekey rather than a replacement. Two other local landmarks worth knowing if you are giving directions: the Williams Barn, red and built in 1952, and the giant letter P on the hillside above Palomar College.

San Marcos questions
I have just moved into a student house. Is rekeying worth it?
If nobody can tell you exactly how many keys exist, yes. That is usually the situation in a house that has turned over several times.
It is a small job — the locks stay where they are, we re-pin them, and you get the only working set. Landlords are often happy to arrange it because it protects them too.
I am a landlord with a few units. Can one key open all of them?
That is exactly what a master key system does — one key for you, and a separate key per unit that opens only that unit.
It is worth doing properly rather than by accident. Keying units alike without a plan means a tenant's key opens a neighbour's door, which is the opposite of what you want.
It is the middle of the night and I am locked out. Are you actually open?
Yes — twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year, weekends and holidays included.
Stay somewhere lit and public while you wait if you can, keep your phone free so the technician can reach you, and have your ID out ready.
What ID do you need before you open a door?
Photo ID plus something that connects you to the address — a licence with that address on it, a lease, a utility bill. For a vehicle, the registration.
It takes a minute and it is not negotiable. It is the same check that stops somebody else doing this to your front door.

Common in the hillside tracts, and easy to work around. Most of what we do is inside the lock and changes nothing you can see.
If a visible part does need replacing, tell us the approved finish and we will match it rather than leave you with a note from the association.
The lock on an older Lake San Marcos house is stiff and slow.
On a lock of that age it is usually accumulated grit and tired springs rather than a failure. Cleaning and servicing brings most of them back.
We would normally rekey at the same time, since the cylinder is already open, so you also end the guessing about old keys.
