What the sea air does to a cylinder
Encinitas sits on a coastal terrace between two lagoons, and most of it is close enough to the water to feel it.
Batiquitos Lagoon closes the north end, San Elijo Lagoon the south, and the whole city sits on the bluff between them with the old Coast Highway 101 running along the front and Interstate 5 a short way inland. That geography is pleasant to live in and unkind to metal.
Salt-laden air works into the parts of a lock nobody looks at. Pin springs lose their snap. The plug picks up a fine grit that grinds every time you turn the key. Strike plates and hinge screws corrode where they meet the frame. What you notice first is a key that has to be lifted, or pulled out slightly, or wiggled — and most people live with that for a year before it finally refuses.
The treatment is unglamorous: clean and service the cylinder with a proper lock lubricant, and never household oil, which holds grit and makes the whole thing worse faster. Usually it is worth rekeying at the same time, because the cylinder is already apart. If it is genuinely past saving we will tell you that instead of servicing something dead. Exterior padlocks on side gates, sheds and beach-gear lockers are the other casualty, and those we would generally just replace with something rated for the environment.

They vote as one city and they do not look remotely alike.
Old Encinitas is the historic core along the 101 — the La Paloma Theatre, the Self-Realization Fellowship whose gold domes have been on that bluff since the 1930s, and Moonlight Beach at the bottom of the hill. Leucadia runs north along the highway, eucalyptus and older, funkier, smaller-lot housing. Cardiff-by-the-Sea is the south end above San Elijo Lagoon, and the Cardiff Kook is on the roundabout whether the city likes it or not.
New Encinitas, inland around Village Park, is conventional post-war and later tract housing on the far side of the 5. Olivenhain is the outlier: semi-rural, larger parcels, horse keeping, long private driveways and gates, at the eastern end where Encinitas Boulevard runs out toward Rancho Santa Fe.
That last one changes how we work. On an Olivenhain property the lock is often the least of it — there is a gate at the road, a barn or tack room, outbuildings, and a house a long way back from anything. Tell us how the gate opens and where the van should stop, or we will be standing at the bottom of your drive ringing you.

Encinitas questions
My key has started sticking. Do I need a new lock?
Usually not. Near the coast a sticking key is nearly always salt and grit inside the cylinder rather than a mechanism that has failed.
Service it with a proper lock lubricant and it generally comes back. If it does not, we will tell you plainly that the cylinder is finished rather than sell you a service you do not need.
Should I spray oil in the lock myself?
Please do not. Household oil and general-purpose penetrating sprays leave a film that collects the fine grit blowing in off the beach, and a lock treated that way grinds itself out faster than one left alone.
A dry or PTFE-based lock lubricant is the right product. If it is already been oiled, say so — it changes how we clean it.
Can you get to a property in Olivenhain with a gate at the road?
Yes, but tell us about the gate when you call. A long private driveway with a closed gate is the single most common reason a locksmith ends up parked at the bottom of a hill making phone calls.
Give us the code, or arrange to open it, and tell us where the van should stop. Barns, tack rooms and outbuildings are ordinary work for us as well.
Something snapped off in my lock. Can it be got out?
Usually, and usually without replacing the lock. Broken key extraction is a routine job — we take the remaining piece out of the plug and then cut you a fresh key from the part you still have or from the lock itself.
Do not try to fish it out with pliers or superglue. That is how a straightforward extraction turns into a replacement.
Do you work along Coast Highway 101 in the evening?
We work at any hour, every day of the year. The 101 through Encinitas is a slow road in summer and at weekends, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than surprise you with it.
Where we can park is the other practical question. If you know a spot near you where a van fits, mention it.
