A suburb that filled up
What a low-vacancy, single-family city calls a locksmith for
Santee is a family suburb of about 60,000 people. It voted to incorporate in 1980, after voting it down three years earlier, and the housing that surrounds that date is what we mostly work on.
At the 2020 census there were 21,848 housing units with a 2.8% vacancy rate, close to full. The median age is 39 and about 54% of households are married couples. That is a settled, family-shaped city, and it generates a very specific list.
The single most common Santee call is the garage. In a house where everyone comes and goes through the garage, the interior door between the garage and the house is the one that gets pulled shut behind somebody with no key on them, and the front door cylinder is the one that has not turned in a year and is stiff when it finally has to.
After that: side gates with padlocks that have rusted open or shut; storage units, which we open with the same ID check as a front door; and the things on the driveway (a camper, a trailer, a boat, a truck canopy), all of which have locks and none of which come with spare keys.
The city also has mobile-home communities, and those doors are not house doors: narrower stiles, different latch geometry, hardware that is not interchangeable with a standard residential deadbolt. Tell us it is a mobile home when you ring and we will bring something that fits.
Getting here is straightforward. The 52 was finally connected through to the 67 in March 2011, which is the route in from the west; the 67 comes up from the 8 at El Cajon. Inside the city it is Mission Gorge Road, Mast Boulevard, Magnolia Avenue and Cuyamaca Street, with the San Diego River greenbelt cutting the place in half. Santee questions
I got locked out through the garage door into the house. Is that different?
It is the most common lockout we get in Santee, and mechanically it is usually easier than a front door: that interior door is often a lighter lock than the one on the street.
We open it non-destructively, check it still latches properly afterwards, and if the cylinder is worn we will say so. It takes a beating because it is the door the whole household uses.
Can you open a storage unit or a padlock on a gate?
Yes. Storage-unit openings and padlocks are on our regular list, with the same identification check as a house: photo ID plus something showing the unit or the property is yours, such as the rental agreement.
Weather-seized padlocks are often recoverable. If one has to be cut, we tell you before we do it and we can supply a replacement while we are there.
I have a camper and a trailer on the driveway with no spare keys.
Very common here. We can cut spares for most of them, and where a lock has no code available we can replace it with something we can key to match the rest.

Do you work on mobile homes in Santee?
