Altitude and hardware
A door that latches in January and fights you in August
Alpine sits at roughly 1,834 feet in the foothills, largely ringed by the Cleveland National Forest.
That elevation buys a real seasonal swing — cool, damp winters with most of the sixteen inches of annual rain falling between November and March, then a long dry, hot summer. Snow is rare in town and ordinary above three thousand feet, and Viejas Mountain stands over four thousand.
Timber doors and frames respond to all of that. They take up moisture in winter and give it back through the summer, and the bolt that slid cleanly into its strike in February starts dragging by August. What people do at that point is force the key, and eventually the key or the cylinder loses. The correct fix is almost never a new lock: it is adjusting or repositioning the strike so the bolt has a clean path again, and checking the hinges have not dropped.
The tell is easy. If you have to lift, push or pull the door while turning the key, it is the door and the frame. If the key itself feels gritty or catches with the door open, it is the cylinder. We check which before recommending anything, because selling somebody a lock they did not need is a good way to get a bad review from a small town where everyone talks.
Rural properties
Large lots, long drives, and a lot of padlocks
Horse ranches and small farms are still common here alongside the housing along Alpine Boulevard.
Interstate 8 runs straight through Alpine and Alpine Boulevard is the main commercial street, with Tavern Road crossing near the centre of the community. Off those, a lot of the residential land is low-density, large-parcel and up a private drive, with the Viejas and Sycuan reservations adjacent — tribal land, separate jurisdiction, and not somewhere an outside locksmith operates.
On a rural parcel the locks that matter are rarely just the front door. Gates, barns, workshops, well houses, sheds and containers all get padlocked, usually with whatever was on the shelf, and out here full sun and dust finish those off fast. Replacing them properly and keying them sensibly — outbuildings alike, house separate — turns a pocketful of keys into one, and stops the habit of leaving a key hanging in the lock because it is easier.
Fire is the other reality of living up here; Alpine was in the path of the 2003 Cedar Fire. Keep a spare key somewhere off the property. When an evacuation order comes, the time you have is not the time you would like.

Alpine questions
My door has started sticking now that it is hot. Is the lock going?
Probably not. A door that behaved all winter and fights you in summer is a door and frame that have moved with the weather, and Alpine has a much bigger seasonal swing than the coast.
The fix is realigning the strike and checking the hinges. Replacing the lock leaves you with a new lock and exactly the same problem.
How do I tell whether it is the door or the lock?
Open the door and try the key with the door swung clear. If it turns smoothly like that, the lock is fine and the alignment is the issue.
If it still catches or feels gritty with the door open, the cylinder needs cleaning, servicing or replacing. We check that first rather than guessing.
Can you get out here at night?
Yes — we are open twenty-four hours, seven days. Alpine is a real distance east and up the 8 from central San Diego and we will not pretend otherwise.

My gate padlocks keep seizing.
Sun, dust and no maintenance will do that to an inexpensive padlock in a couple of seasons. Then the key snaps and the gate is a problem.
We replace them with something built for outdoor use and key the outbuildings alike, so you carry one key rather than six and stop leaving keys hanging in locks.
Should I keep a spare key away from the house?
In this part of the county, yes. Alpine has been in the path of major wildfires, including the Cedar Fire in 2003, and evacuation notice can be very short.
Leave one with someone you trust off the property, or fit a proper key safe. A key under a rock by the door is not a plan.
Do you work on the reservations?
No. Viejas and Sycuan are tribal land, a separate jurisdiction with their own security arrangements, and that is not something we operate on.
