Why the hardware matches
One builder, one era, thirty thousand doors
Carlos Tavares and Lou Burgener started building in 1950 and called it the village within a city. Families moved in from May 1951.
Between 1952 and 1954 the pace ran at roughly seven completed homes a day, on land assembled from the Peavey cattle ranch, Mission Bay Heights and Tecolote Heights. The developers threw out the standard grid and laid the streets to follow the canyons and catch the bay views, which is why Clairemont still feels different to drive around than the neighbourhoods either side of it.
For a locksmith, the interesting consequence is uniformity. An entire neighbourhood of houses built by the same people, to the same specification, in the same three years, has the same door preparation and — very often — the same original hardware, now seventy-odd years old. We see the same three issues over and over here: a knob lock doing the whole job with no deadbolt behind it; a deadbolt that was added later and never quite lined up; and a strike plate held by short screws into soft timber that has been kicked loose or has simply pulled through.
None of that is exotic and none of it is expensive to correct. Fitting a proper deadbolt into a correctly bored door, with long screws into the frame stud rather than into the jamb trim, changes how that door behaves under force far more than most people expect.
The five Clairemonts
Bay Park, Bay Ho, North Clairemont and the mesa
One name, five distinct areas, bounded by three freeways.
Interstate 5 closes the west side, Interstate 805 the east, and State Route 52 the north. Inside that, Bay Park sits low on the Morena Boulevard side facing Mission Bay, Bay Ho above it, North Clairemont up toward the 52, and Clairemont Mesa East and West either side of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Balboa Avenue and Burgener Boulevard — named for one of the builders — carry most of the cross-traffic.
The canyons that shaped the street plan are still there and still open: Tecolote Canyon Natural Park runs six miles and covers over nine hundred acres, and Marian Bear Memorial Park in San Clemente Canyon adds several hundred more. They are pleasant, and they mean that neighbouring streets sometimes require a long way round.
The other Clairemont pattern worth naming is conversion. A lot of these houses have been extended, garages have become rooms, and separate units have been added at the back. Once a property has two front doors and two households, the sensible thing is keying that reflects that — separate keys where separation is wanted, a master key where the owner needs access to both.

Clairemont questions
My house only has a knob lock on the front door. Is that a problem?
It is the most common thing we find in Clairemont, and yes, a knob lock on its own does very little. The locking mechanism is inside the handle, which is the part most easily defeated.
A proper deadbolt is a separate bolt into the frame. Fitted correctly, it is the single biggest improvement most of these houses can make.
Someone said my strike plate screws are too short.
They very often are on houses of this era — short screws that only reach the jamb trim rather than the structural stud behind it.
Swapping them for long screws that bite into the framing is a small job with a disproportionate effect on how the door stands up to force.
We converted the garage and now have two front doors.
Then it is worth deciding deliberately how they are keyed rather than letting it happen by accident. Separate keys where you want separation, and a master key if the owner needs both.
Doing that at one visit is far cheaper than sorting out a tangle of unrelated keys later.
The original hardware still works. Should I replace it?
Not automatically. Plenty of 1950s hardware is better made than what would replace it, and rekeying and servicing it costs less than a new lockset.
What we would change is anything that is the only thing securing the door. Keep the handle, add the bolt.
Why do the streets here go nowhere?
By design. The developers deliberately abandoned a grid so the streets would follow the canyons and pick up bay views, and the canyons are still there as open parkland.
It is why we ask for a cross street rather than trusting a route — neighbouring streets can be a long way round from each other.
