A city you can cross in minutes

Cedros, the cove and the bluff

Interstate 5 splits Solana Beach down the middle and Lomas Santa Fe Drive is how you get across it.

West of the freeway is the part visitors know. The Cedros Design District is a working street of galleries, furniture and design showrooms, importers and cafés running alongside the rail line, with the farmers market on Sundays. Fletcher Cove is the beach park at the bottom of the hill. The Belly Up has been putting bands on since 1974. The Solana Beach station takes the Coaster and Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner, which makes it the transport anchor for a good part of North County.

La Colonia de Eden Gardens is one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods in the city, laid out in the 1920s by Mexican farming families, and it still reads as its own place rather than an extension of anything. East of the 5 the housing is more conventional and more recent.

The bluff itself is the thing that shapes the city. Solana Beach sits on sandstone cliffs above the sand, and a lot of condominium development went up on those bluffs before incorporation. Erosion and cliff management have been a live local subject ever since. For our purposes what matters is simpler: those are shared buildings, with shared gates, lobbies and garages, and access to them belongs to the association rather than to us.

Shops and shared buildings

Two kinds of key control

A design showroom and a bluff-top condominium have the same underlying problem from opposite directions.

On Cedros, the businesses are small, independent and stock-heavy — furniture, art, imported goods sitting in a unit overnight. When a member of staff moves on, or a unit changes hands between tenants, the honest answer to "who can open the back door" is usually "we are not completely sure". Rekeying the existing cylinders to a new key settles it in an afternoon, and a small master key system means the next departure only touches one door.

In the condominium buildings the split is the other way round. We work on your unit door, your storage cage and your mailbox. The street gate, the lobby, the lift and the garage are the association's access control, not a lock we can or should touch on one owner's say-so. Tell us the building and arrange for us to be let in, and the job itself is straightforward.

And because everything here is within a few hundred yards of salt water, both kinds of door corrode. A cylinder facing the ocean on a bluff-top walkway ages faster than the same cylinder on the inland side of the same building. If yours has started to grind, service it before it seizes on a Sunday.

Next door

Between the lagoon and the racetrack

Solana Beach runs from San Elijo Lagoon down to Del Mar, with Encinitas immediately north.

In a city this compact the building name or the cross street is worth more than the address alone. Every job on this page is the same job on our emergency locksmith, residential locksmith and full locksmith services pages — this page is only about doing it here. FAQ

Solana Beach questions

I am in a bluff-top condo. What can you actually work on?

Your unit door, your storage and your mailbox — those are yours. The street gate, the lobby, the lift and the garage belong to the association, and we do not touch shared access control on one resident's instruction.

Tell us the building and arrange for us to be let through, and the rest is a normal job.

Our shop is on Cedros and someone did not hand their keys back.

Rekey the cylinders you already have. Re-pinning them to a new key kills every old copy at once, including the ones nobody remembers cutting.

If you have a stockroom, an office and a street door, that is also the right moment to set up a small master key system so the same thing is less painful next time.

Is the salt air really a problem this far up the bluff?

Yes. Height above the beach helps a little, but exposure matters more — a door facing the ocean corrodes faster than one on the inland side of the same building.

The early sign is a key that needs a wiggle. Service it then and you usually keep the lock; wait until it seizes and you often do not.

Can you get a key made if I lost mine on the Coaster?

For a house, yes — we can open the door and cut you fresh keys on the spot. For a vehicle we cut and program a replacement at the car, including transponders and fobs.

Bring photo ID and something that connects you to the property or the vehicle. We check, every time.

How long does it take you to reach Solana Beach?

We will give you an honest answer on the phone rather than a number on a page. It is well up the coast from central San Diego and the 5 decides most of it.

If the drive is longer than you want to wait, we would rather tell you that up front.
