Navigating the peninsula
Three roads down the spine, and everything else broken up
Rosecrans Street on the bay side, Sunset Cliffs Boulevard on the ocean side, Catalina Boulevard along the crest.
Those three carry the peninsula end to end, with Interstate 8 running along the northern edge through the Midway district. Between them the terrain does something unhelpful: canyons and ridges break the residential streets into sections that share a name but do not connect, so a satnav route and an actual route are not always the same thing.
That is why we ask for the cross street. Roseville and La Playa sit on the bay with the yacht clubs and the marinas; Fleetridge is on the hill above Roseville; Loma Portal is the bayside slope between Rosecrans and Chatsworth; the Wooded Area is the mature-tree section on the bay side; Sunset Cliffs runs along the ocean bluffs at the western edge. Shelter Island, built out of dredged sandbank in the 1950s, holds hotels, marinas and restaurants.
Down at the southern tip are Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Cabrillo National Monument and the 1854 Old Point Loma Lighthouse — and, alongside them, Naval Base Point Loma, which controls around eighteen hundred acres. As with any installation, base access runs through the base, not through a locksmith. Sort access first; everything on the civilian side of the peninsula is an ordinary callout.

More of the security work here happens on the water and in shared buildings than in most neighbourhoods.
The bay side of Point Loma is a working waterfront — three yacht clubs including the San Diego Yacht Club, half a dozen small-boat marinas, boat yards, brokerages and the sportfishing fleet. That produces a category of work most neighbourhoods never generate: dock boxes, boat lockers, slip gates and storage. The rule of thumb is the same as in an apartment block. Your box, your locker and your own boat are yours; the marina's gates and common facilities go through the marina office rather than through us on one member's say-so.
Liberty Station is the other distinctive piece. The former Naval Training Center closed in 1997 and its 361 acres are now a mixed civilian district of offices, studios, schools, shops and arts tenancies in the original buildings. Tenancies change, and the buildings were not laid out with modern commercial keying in mind. That is master-key territory: one key that opens what a manager needs, separate keys that do not, and a written record of who holds what.
Residentially the peninsula is mostly single-family, and much of it is old enough that the original hardware is still fitted. Add ocean exposure on the Sunset Cliffs side and bay air on the Roseville side and you get the same coastal corrosion story as the rest of the coast — a key that needs a wiggle, a bolt that drags, a padlock on a side gate that has given up entirely.

Point Loma questions
Can you come onto Naval Base Point Loma?
Not on our own authority. The installation controls its own gates and access for anyone who is not authorised runs through the base's own process, arranged by a sponsor or command.
If the vehicle or the quarters are inside the fence, get that sorted first. Everything on the civilian side of the peninsula is a normal job.
My dock box lock has seized and the key snapped in it.
Standard bay-side story. Salt air kills inexpensive padlocks from the inside and the key gives way before the shackle does.
We extract the broken piece, open the box, and can fit a replacement built for a marine environment so you are not doing this again next season.
Can you work on the marina gate?
Not on one berth-holder's instruction. Marina gates and common facilities are the marina's access control and that has to come from the office.
Your own boat, box and locker are a different matter and we can work on those directly.
Why do you keep asking for a cross street?
Because Point Loma's hills and canyons split streets into sections that share a name and never meet. A house number alone can put us on the correct street and the wrong side of a canyon.
A cross street removes that entirely, and it is the single most useful thing you can tell us here.
We are taking over a unit at Liberty Station.
Rekey before you move anything in. Those buildings have had a long series of tenants and there is no realistic way to account for old keys.
If you have an office, a store and a street door, we would key them into one small system at the same time rather than leave you with unrelated keys.
The front door on my Sunset Cliffs house is stiff.
On the ocean side that is usually corrosion in the cylinder plus a door that has moved. We check both rather than guess.
Servicing the lock and adjusting the strike fixes most of them without replacing anything you can see.
