More than one building

Barns, tack rooms, gates and outbuildings

On a horse property the house lock is often the least interesting lock on the site.

Poway has kept a genuinely rural character on a lot of its residential land — horse keeping is ordinary here, the trail network runs to over sixty miles, and the city hosts a national rodeo each year. What that means practically is properties with a gate at the road, a long drive, a barn or stable, a tack room holding several thousand dollars of equipment, a feed store, and sometimes a workshop, before you ever reach the house.

Each of those wants a different answer. Tack rooms want a decent lock and a key that is not on everybody's ring. Gates and outbuildings want padlocks that survive full sun and dust rather than the cheapest one on the shelf, and they want to be keyed sensibly — either alike, so one key does the outbuildings, or deliberately separate where different people need different access. A master key arrangement is often the neatest fit: one key for the owner that opens everything, and restricted keys for anyone helping with the animals.

The practical request when you call: tell us how the gate opens and where the van should stop. A closed gate at the bottom of a long drive is the single most common reason a locksmith ends up parked on a road making phone calls.

The rest of Poway

Old Poway, Green Valley, the lake and the business park

It is a city of nearly forty square miles, incorporated in 1980, and it is not all ranch land.

Poway Road runs east to west as the commercial spine, with Pomerado Road, Espola Road, Community Road and Midland Road as the main north–south routes. State Route 67 is the eastern connection toward Lakeside and Ramona, Interstate 15 the western one, and Scripps Poway Parkway and Ted Williams Parkway carry the traffic out to the coast side.

Old Poway Park holds the historic buildings and a working steam locomotive that runs at weekends. Lake Poway is a sixty-acre reservoir and recreation area with the Blue Sky reserve beyond it. Green Valley is one of the better-known residential pockets, ranch-style houses on generous lots. There are senior mobile home communities too, and those are worth calling out separately: a manufactured home takes a different lockset to a conventional stick-built door, and turning up with the wrong thing wastes everybody's afternoon. Tell us it is a mobile home and we will bring what fits.

The Poway Business Park runs to over seven hundred acres of light industry, research and distribution. That is standard commercial work — master key systems, rekeys when a tenancy or a manager changes, and better hardware on back doors and yard gates.

Poway was evacuated in large part during both the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Creek Fire. If you live up here, keep a spare key somewhere off the property.

Next door

Inland and east

Poway sits between Rancho Bernardo and the 67, with Escondido north and the Lakeside side of East County beyond.

Gate first, then the address — that order genuinely saves time out here. Every job on this page is the same job on our emergency locksmith, residential locksmith and full locksmith services pages — this page is only about doing it here. The whole coverage map is on the home page.

FAQ

Poway questions

There is a gate at the bottom of my drive. What do you need from me?

The code, or someone to open it, plus where you would like the van to stop. That one piece of information is the difference between us arriving and us calling you from the road.

If the gate itself is the problem — a seized padlock, a lost key, a lock that will not turn — that is ordinary work for us too.

Can you do the barn and the tack room as well as the house?

Yes, and it is usually worth doing them together. Outbuildings tend to accumulate whatever padlock was handy at the time, on whatever key nobody can find.

We would normally key the outbuildings alike, keep the house separate, and set it up so the owner has one key that covers everything.

I live in a mobile home. Is that different?

Yes, and it matters. Manufactured homes generally take a different size and type of lockset to a conventional stick-built door, so a standard replacement will not fit.

Tell us when you call and we will bring hardware that actually fits rather than making two trips.

We are taking a unit in the business park.

Rekey before the stock goes in. Units in a park that size pass through tenants, fit-out contractors and landlords, and there is no reliable way to trace old keys.

Then key the office, the personnel door and the yard gate into one small master system rather than carrying four unrelated keys around.

Should I keep a spare key off site?

Up here, yes. Poway was substantially evacuated during both the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Creek Fire, and an evacuation order does not wait while you hunt for a key.

Somewhere off the property with someone you trust, or a properly fitted key safe. Not under a rock by the door — that is the first place anyone looks.

How long is the drive out to Poway?

We will tell you honestly on the phone. It is inland and up, and the answer depends on the hour and where the van already is.

We are open twenty-four hours, seven days, and we would rather give you a real number than a flattering one.
